2011 Resolutions - February Travel Page

One of my resolutions for this year is to travel outside the U.S.  We had been planning to go to Puebla, Mexico, where I would teach in a summer abroad program. Unfortunately, the University decided that Mexico is too dangerous right now to take students. Sigh.  So, rather than give up on the resolution entirely, I've been working on plans to attend a conference in England.  It's to be held at Cambridge University, July 20-22. It's not a done deal yet, but it's definitely in the works. So I thought it was fair to add it to my resolutions art journal. One exciting thing about the trip is that I'm planning it to just be me and Paul - no kids! We'll send them to stay with the relatives in Southern California. In addition to the time in Cambridge, we'll spend time in London. I'd love to have suggestions for other places to visit in the general London/Cambridge area of England, and I'm curious whether I'll be anywhere near where any of you live. I'd also love to know if you have travel plans for the summer.

I'd recommend the various art galleries in London - Tate Modern is my favourite. Tate Britain has a big watercolour exhibition on this year.

I'm in London several times a year, could well be there in July, would be great to meet up if our dates coincide

Wow, a trip wothout kids? Now, there's a thought!

Cambridge is gorgeous. I visited many times when my brother was studying there. You of course won't be sleeping on the floor in a student room though! It sounds like a wonderful trip Rinda (tho sadly you won't be near me)

I was so excited when I read this,Rinda....until I saw the dates....I can't believe you are over here when we are on holiday!!!!
But...we are holidaying in the UK....just nowhere near Cambridge or London....I assume you won't come all this way just for 3 or 4 days.....so am hoping you will still be here on on 24th July when we return.
Would love, love, love to meet you in London....which is within easy striking distance of the South Coast.
There are so many great places to visit in London....could certainly let you have more details....but don't know Cambridge at all.

This sounds wonderful, I do hope it works out :-) The Doctor did his MPhil and PhD at Cambridge and The Boy was born while we lived there! It's a gorgeous town to just wander round, looking at the colleges, maybe taking a punt trip on the Cam. Grantchester (just outside Cambridge) is a lovely place to take a trip to.

I don't live near Cambridge any more, sadly. I do keep talking about a trip back there though. If you confirm yours, maybe I'll look into trying to match up our dates - there are a few friends nearby that I'd love to see!

It sounds like a wonderful plan. We are going to Vancouver for four days in July/August and then on a two-week sea/land cruise to Alaska. I'm very excited as this is our first cruise and we're going with long-time friends.

How exciting for you! If you are in Cambridge you will be about an hour's drive from me - my husband used to work in Cambridge and commuted every day! When you are in London, again we are only an hour away - would love to meet up, perhaps with Jacky too? We are going to Cyprus for a week in early July, just me and Hugh again, like we did Portugal last year. I am really looking forward to it. Have you visited the UK before?

You will love Cambridge!!! Wonderful for just strolling around! And of course London is gorgeous, one of my favorite big cities.
IF you have time and can imagine going to the west instead of staying in the London/Cambridge area I'd recommend the Cotswold Hills - beautiful English countryside, just lovely.

Good for you Rinda. I thoroughly enjoyed my trip to Greece last year. Going to spend a week on the ocean at the Outer Banks this summer with the whole family, that's it travel wise for me this year. Oh, and a visit to my daughter in Colorado.
