GIT: Passport to Art (Childhood Travels)

I've been working on an altered book about travel called "Passport to Art."  The prompt for Day #22 was about childhood memories.  I did two pages, featuring the two main places I traveled as a child.  The one above is about my childhood trips to Houston, Texas.
And the second page is about the trips we would take to a rented beach house in Huntington Beach. It wasn't very far from home, but it was so much fun and a great place to vacation.
In between the two spreads lies the page about my mother's funeral. It felt right to sandwich it between happy memories of my childhood.
I'm linking up to Glue it Tuesday, and I'm curious about what type of travel you experienced as a child?

  1. Love the photo you've incorporated into the top page.
We lived in London when I was a child and almost every summer would stay in a bungalow on the Kent coast....I remember spending hours on the beach....the tide was massive....and when it was out there was about a half mile of sand to get to the sea....I still love it there.
    Thanks for the courgette recipe.

  2. I really like the way your book is developing with the various sizes and shapes of pages. Really makes me want to pick it up and flick through. The starkness of the funeral page against the other two is very striking.

Travel as a child - lots of memories there... mostly visiting family tho.

  3. We had family in Guernsey, one of the Channel Islands near France, and went there by train and ferry every summer. My birthday is in Aug, so many happy days. I don't ever remember it raining! As a teenager we went to the Yorkshire countryside, again idyllic. Also, I played in various youth orchestras and we toured Fance, Germany, Holland, and did the Edinburgh Festival. Looking back, i was as busy in the school holidays as I was in termtime. Nothing has changed now I am the other side of the desk!

  4. It seems so fitting that your page about your Mom is where it is - isn't that what our memories are like, with things sandwiched inbetween other things, light and dark ... Such a great idea to journal about one's childhood holiday memories. I enjoy seeing your art journal very much.

  6. I agree, great place to put your page about your mother. Did it ever rain in childhood summers? Our family always camped, usually somewhere along the south coast of England but we did also have an epic camping trip up to Scotland. We didn't go abroad as a family.

  7. Your book is shaping up really nicely. The travelling which stands out in my mind from childhood is when we went up and down the motorway to visit my Grandparents. Only about 70 miles: but in those days it seemed to require a lot of preparation with special sweets for the trip and a singsong led by my mother to put the time in. It took a lot longer then too, the roads are different now

  8. We had many summer trips to Mexico, and of course the big long trip to California. We had lots of fun, I just did not like the long drive in a car full of screaming kids. I don't know how my parents put up with us. I love the picture of Tia Lupe and Uncle Pete, I have not seen this picture before so I will copy and print it.

  9. Beautiful pages Rinda. I'm getting excited thinking about what I will put in my journal now I am inspired by these.
Still on page 8 so a long way to go. I love how you sandwiched your mothers funeral in between these two happy memories. A fitting place.

  10. I guess your Mum died when you were a child then, I'm so sorry. Nice to sandwich her between happy memories though and super book. I hated traveling as a child as I do now so I'm glad I resisted doing this challenge.
Just read your poem, it is lovely so poignant. My Dad died as we were travelling to see him, he'd had a stroke the night before so it was all quite sudden I was sick with pregnancy at the time. The last time I saw him was at our wedding 4 months before when he gave me away and we popped in on our honeymoon too as we were in his neck of the woods. I never got to say goodbye but I did thank him for the wonderful speech at our wedding. The last time he phoned I didn't speak to him as I felt so ill, then he was gone. That was 15 years ago and I am in tears writing this. BJ

  11. More great pages, Rinda, and I love that the page about your mom is sandwiched between these two memories! We mostly traveled to see family when I was growing up - from Texas to Mississippi. Once (before we moved to Texas) we drove from Mississippi to Detroit, Michigan. Those are the only trips I remember from my childhood.

  12. This book is coming together so wonderfully. I love your new travel pages, and the placement of the page about your mother seems so right. I don't think I would have thought to do that.

The first traveling I did as a child were car trips from Kansas (where I was born) to Ohio (where my grandparents all lived.) There was no air conditioning, we traveled in the summer, and it was hot and long. I loved the time with our grandparents and my great-aunts though. Later, after we moved back to Ohio, I took several week-long trips with my family to places like New Orleans, Williamsburg, the Smoky Mts., and New York City.

  13. I'm loving looking at this book. It's going to be one very special book when it's finished. When I was a child we used to drive up to a rented cottage on Lake Huron every August about 3 hours north of our house and other than that there was the occasional visit to relatives who lived in eastern Ontario plus 1 trip down to New Jersey while Dad attended a convention in New York City. My Mum's sister and her family lived in New Jersey so we stayed with them.
