More "Wild" Art and Thoughts on Scale (PPF!)
Here's another art journal page I made in the "Art of Wild Abandonment" class. It was such fun to cut leaves from various patterned and textured paper and also to make little houses to hang on my branch. I liked it quite a bit. On the other hand. . .
I wasn't as crazy about this page. I painted vellum and the cut it up to make the butterfly and the poppies. Made some mushrooms/toadstools out of old sewing pattern paper. I think there's something "off" about the scale of everything. It feels huge and a little clumsy to me. Maybe I'm just more comfortable with small, detailed things. . .
What about you? Are you more large scale or small scale?

I struggle with anything that is not square or rectangular!
ReplyDeleteI like your leaves and little houses very much but I would struggle with the larger canvas although I love the concept of using a paper pattern and the flowers in that one look great.
ReplyDeleteI really like both pages....and think the tissue and vellum would look particularly good IRL....I do know what you mean about the scale though.I think I'm probably 'medium' scale!!
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely small scale! I love dolls houses and used to make lots of tiny things before I got into scrapbooking. I completely agree with Jacky - bet that vellum looks fabulous IRL
ReplyDeleteI think both pages turned out great! Scale doesn't matter in whimsy, but based on the size of your butterfly, I'd agree the mushrooms are huge.

ReplyDeletethere are pages of mine that i really like and those that i really don't - more often than not, i have no idea why! sometimes a little time will do the trick. other times i turn to gesso. the class you are taking sounds very interesting.

ReplyDeleteLOVE LOVE the first piece here... those little bird houses are too special. I do the occasional BIG piece but small scale allows me to play with paints when i have little time - much less time consuming. Happy PPF! xoxo

I do love those little houses. It's such a quirky painting. I understand what you mean about the second one. Maybe the lines in the dress patterns made the toadstools look a little flat? It's still pretty though - don't knock yourself!
ReplyDeleteBoth pages look great, but I have to agree with you that the first one with the leaves is really special. The colors, shapes and textures just flow together with great unity. My son would love those mushroom houses, though!

ReplyDeleteI usually work large scale when I am painting but prefer small scale when I am using watercolours, so it depends on the medium but anything smaller that 6x6 is a real challenge for me!

ReplyDeleteLove the branches and leaves! It's fabulous. I like the second one too, but I know how you feel, sometimes I love the individual elements, but I don't like how they look together. Personally, I love the pattern paper mushrooms, and want to draw a whole world of bugs and tiny critters to live in them.

ReplyDeleteBoth of these are so nicely put together - but my favourite is the leaves and houses. I am so behind with this class.... Not sure about scale: sometimes I like homing in, and sometimes zooming out!
