Portraits of Gypsy

I finally got out my camera (as opposed to my iphone) and tried to get a decent portrait of my new dog, Gypsy.  Here (above) is the first one I took.  It may be the best one, but I didn't stop there.
I kept snapping away:
The hardest part was trying to get some expression on her face.  For the next one, I meowed (for the life of me, I have no idea why blogger won't post this in the correct orientation!):
And I thought I should get at least one that had her whole body in it:
Eventually, Gypsy grew weary of the whole thing, and I remembered Shimelle's idea about just putting your camera on the ground amd pressing the button:
I learned that shooting a dog portrait was much harder than I imagined!  So, which is your favorite shot (#1-6)?  And a couple of questions for you dog lovers - do you have any great tips to share for shooting pet portraits?  And, what kind of dog do you think Gypsy is?  We've been thinking she's a Norfolk Terrier mix, but I'm curious what others think.

  1. Gypsy is adorable! I think I like the last shot the best (where you placed the camera on the floor). It truly captures her emotions at that point.

  2. I think maybe the first one is my favourite, but with a model like that - they are all gorgeous.

  3. The first and last are my favourites....but she's so cute...she looks great in all of them.
We tend to get the best portraits [as opposed to action shots] when the dogs are knowing they're about to get a 'treat'....bribery [I mean reward] works just as well with dogs as it does with children!!!

  8. I love them all, she is gorgeous. I always have trouble taking shots of our dog (Welsh Border Collie), getting her to stay still would be a start lol

  12. Lovely pictures, Rinda - food for scrapping perhaps?
I love the first, second and last ones - but, as the others said, they're all so lovely because of the subject!
She's definitely a Terrier... but I don't know enough about dogs to give an opinion on her origins - sorry! I think her breed should officially be "Cute Terrier".
I was taking pictures of my mum's little cat today, while I played with her. I took 3 - maybe one will turn out to be good.

  13. Hi Rinda ~ I'm with everyone else on this. LOVE the first and final shots. I'm thinking she's a terrier mix myself, but no matter what her breed, she is just SO cute! I'm glad you are enjoying having her as a pet {as evidenced by a photo session and a post on your blog}. :o) xo

  15. So adorable!! I think my favorite is the last one. We don't have the easiest time photographing our pug. I swear, it takes about 25 pictures to get one good one!

  21. I was sure I had commented here, and yet I cannot see that I have???? The wonders of blogger!

Anyway, I am a big fan of shots taken at ground level, for some reason theya re really speaking to me at the moment and I'm finding I'm putting the camera down a lot!

  22. Rinda I don't think you need any tips on photographing pets as I think you have captured Gypsy's spirit in these photos. She looks like she sits well for the camera. I'm partial to photo #2, I love it when puppies look up at their owners with those puppy dog eyes :)I have an American Eskimo named Edwin and he will sit well for the camera too. P.S. - I checked out your friends post and LOVED her version of Alice in Florida!
