One of the things I want to do with my artwork this year is to make it more "my own" - to include more of my original art (drawing, photography, etc.) and fewer images created by other people (through purchased collage sheets, clip art, stamped images, etc.).
So, I'm taking a class on drawing and painting faces. Here's some early attempts. What do you think? Do you have a favorite? I also plan to compose more photographs to use in my mixed media collage.
As for using fewer images from other people, I'm having a hard time purging my collection of images. Although I think I can (and will) do it. But I can't even bear the thought of getting rid of my stamps. Although I'm feeling pretty "done" with card making at the moment, I'm not yet ready to get rid of my stamps. It just doesn't feel like time.
I guess the question I keep rolling over in my mind is the extent to which I feel good using tools and images created by other to create my own art. Thoughts?
Wow Rinda I think these are great! Can't wait to see what you create in 2012! You are so talented!
ReplyDeleteI have the same internal conversation relating to digiart. Sometimes I want to focus on an end vision and so use whatever makes the pocess faster and sometimes I want to focus on the process and then I like to use only components that I have created. Recently I have looked at digital items for sale and then not bought them because I thought I could create something simillar myself - but sometimes by time is more precious than my money. Will be interested to see your work using a you follow this path
ReplyDeleteThese are wonderful, Rinda! Being a card maker at heart and making 100's of cards each year, there is no way I would relinquish my stamps, but I think our goals are so very different. You see yourself as an artist (as well you are!), and I see myself as a paper crafter. Very different profiles.
ReplyDeleteHaving just started into stamping last year (with a mighty small collection at this point) I'm nowhere near where you are in the creative process! I love your art and can see why you would want to make the transition though.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite is Clive in the bottom right corner. and whilst I know what you mean about using things that other people have made to create your own art, it's often about you use that basic 'thing' and make it into something of your own. Your stamping is so good, I hope you don't give it up completely!
ReplyDeleteWhat lovely drawings Rinda. I am excited about what you will make and show us this year.
ReplyDeleteRinda, these are great. I like the natural feel to them. Yes, please continue to paint. It will be lots of fun and a learning process for us all to see your progression. Rock on!! You are doing great!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Deb when she says it's about using something and making it your own.....I don't think using stamps on your art makes it any less yours....or any less 'real art'.....you have made some wonderful collages that included stamped images.Just like Christy Tomlinson uses loads of stamps and masks in her 'She Art' and produces wonderful art that is certainly all her own. And,of course, you may want to return to cardmaking at some time!!! If not....I can guarantee a happy home for unwanted stamps!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI can't draw at all....and while I don't consider myself an artist.....I don't think being unable to draw means you can't be one.
I do love how your face drawings are developing....the top left is my favourite.....I'll be so interested to see how your art develops this year.
Just popped back to say that there's a new class on Christy's blog that you might be interested in...it's here
ReplyDeleteThey are all very good but I am very partial to the man. I totally understand what you are saying about how you feel. I think you will feel more truly an original artist following this path, but you create amazing art using images provided by other so I hope you will continue to be inspired to do some of that again at some point.
ReplyDeleteI always think of something Mary Jo McGraw told me once; stamps are tools, use them! But I can see where you are coming from as far as wanting to make your own original art. I don't think I will ever be "done" with card making LOL
ReplyDeleteThese look great! I like the first one. I still have my stamps from 12 years ago when I was into making cards. You just never know when you might need one
ReplyDeleteI love the top left and the bottom right - and wish I had talent like yours! Looking forward to seeing how it develops this year ...
ReplyDeleteWhat a great goal, to include more of your own art! Looking forward to seeing your progress.
ReplyDeleteI'm not at the point where I want to draw my own stuff . . . but who knows what will happen, at the beginning of last year I had no interest in art journaling. However, I've enjoyed creating quite a few pages!
These drawn portraits are great. I would like to learn how to draw/sketch.
ReplyDeleteI've enjoyed reading your recaps over the last week.
Now that I'm home I plan to get my pictures developed to put into the scavenger hunt scrapbook.
Congratulations on your weight loss.
Hi Rinda ~ I'm loving your face drawings!!! My favorite in this set is the one in the upper left corner. When I first saw it I thought, "Hey! It's a self-portrait!" because I think it looks a lot like you. :o)
ReplyDeleteAs for the stamps: don't pitch them just yet!!! I think it would be cool to see a combination of your work mixed with the stamps.
