This is an art journal page that I created in Dina's class, in response to a Shimelle class prompt about advice to give your children. It has five key pieces of advice that I truly hope they learn:
1. Make good friends and hold on to them. For life.
2. Take care of your skin. After thirty, everything shows on your face.
3. Marry the person who loves you for who you are not the person they want you to be.
4. Learn your grandfather's definition of "organizational ability" - always be there for the family. Always.
5. Don't trade your integrity for a few pennies - give back extra change.
Of these, I think I might write a bit more about #4. It is really a core belief that my dad instilled in all six of his children, and I think there's a "true story" behind it. Is there any advice you want to pass on to your children (or nieces, nephews, etc.)?
From a design perspective, this page is supposed to be unbalanced but still satisfying. I'm not sure I am happy with its design, and I welcome any feedback on it.
I love the list Rinda and #4 was the point that stood our for me as my Dad and family in general are like this.
ReplyDeleteDesign is always hard for me - on the one hand I find that the photo is distracting, but, it draws my attention and perhaps that is the point of the page???
The colours are wonderful and I really like the techniques you have used for the background.
I think you have the perfect unbalance for the design but maintains the aesthetically pleasing quality you were going after. It's beautiful and I love your advice for your kids. #4 did it for me too.
ReplyDeletei love this page and the answers for ur faqs. i love the #3 and would dearly love to hear the answer to #4. i think pearls of wisdom from our families are so important and many things i have learnt have come from family traditions.
ReplyDeleteJo xxxx
yeah for your Dad - love that definition and looking forward to hearing the full story
ReplyDeleteDesignwise - love the background. I want to move the photo - perhaps bigger and behind the writing (but that might be a very 'digi' reaction)
I think you know a lot more about art page design than I do soI'm not going to comment on that :) but I do love your pieces of advice - my FIL used to say "always leave something in it for the other man"
ReplyDeletesuch great advice! it made me think how i would sum up what i believe is important... i will have to ponder that for awhile. you always make me think!
ReplyDeleteI actually really love the page you created, Rinda, and I love your advice!!! Escpecially #2 about taking care of your skin. LOL That's something you really take for granted when you are young and by the time you realize you should have taken more care it's too late!
ReplyDeleteI love your advice,Rinda.....so well put.
ReplyDeleteFunnily enough I don't really find this unbalanced....not that I'm any sort of expert!!The way you've placed the two sets of circles....one with photo...and one with journaling....sort of makes it seem balanced....I'd probably have had a slightly larger photo myself.....and the colours are stunning.
Love your advice.
ReplyDeleteThe advice is fab, Rinda - I'd love to hear more about #4 :-)
ReplyDeleteI think the page is lovely, too xx
I love this page and even after looking more closely at it when I read the end of the post, can't find anything I'd change about it. The colors are beautiful and I find the design quite pleasing. The advice is wonderful.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely amazing page. I wouldn't change anything on it. Love your advice. Hope your children take note x
ReplyDeleteWonderful words of wisdom!
ReplyDeleteTo this day I always thank my Tia Carmen because when I was a little girl she would tell all her nieces and her daughters to "Marry the man that treats you like a princess!" I so believe this and married the best husband in the world thanks to that advice! I always tell this to my daughters too. Oh and by the way my aunt always says she wishes more of us would have listened to her.
ReplyDeleteTotally gorgeous page!
ReplyDeleteGreat page, love the advice
